The edible and useful Fishtail Palm
The Fishtail Palm is very common. The roots are edible, the tuberous section tastes like coconut, and the core of young plants in edible. It has a fruit, but once the tree fruits, it dies. It takes between 15 and 25 years for a tree to fruit.
The fruit raphides (crystals) of calcium oxalate. If you cook it, these dissolve and then become edible. The seeds are edible as is.
There is an extremely fibrous outer bark on larger trees that is superb for fire kindling.
